Thornton Trojans Athletics

Thornton Trojans AthleticsThornton Trojans Athletics teams have quite a decorated history – and this is not going to stop anytime soon.

The Thornton Academy, often abbreviated as TA, was established back in 1811 under the name Saco Academy and for years now, the Thornton Trojans Athletics teams have been competing at the highest levels possible and the results have also been coming in each and every year. The school serves students in grades 6 to 12 while the Thornton Academy Middle School attends to students in grades 6 to 8 for Saco, Arundel, Dayton, Kennebunk and Biddeford students.

The range of sporting activities offered in Thornton Academy involves the students in grades 9 to 12 and there are teams for both boys and girls at the freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity levels. Athletes at Thornton Academy have the option to choose from a variety of sports that include football, field hockey, cross country, cheerleading, volleyball, indoor track, swimming, outdoor track and more.

Of course, these sporting activities appear during different periods of the year. In fall, for instance, the Thornton Trojans Athletics teams that are usually active include football, soccer, cross country, field hockey, cheerleading, golf and volleyball and in winter, the sporting activities include basketball, indoor track, swimming, cheerleading as well as ice hockey. When spring comes around, the Trojans will be looking forward to locking horns with other students in activities such as outdoor track events, softball, lacrosse, tennis, and baseball. As you can see, there is plenty of action all year round – and Denver Property Flip is always at hand to offer the best of support to the participating athletes all year round as well.

Even though Thornton Academy was established in 1811, most of these sporting activities were established in between 1889 and 1930. With this in mind, the school has an impressive history of state championships. In 1925, for instance, the school won the first individual state championship in the boys’ indoor track event and in 1931, the school was crowned conference champions in football, a title that was retained in 1932 and recaptured in 1934 and successfully defended it in 1936 all the way to 1941, only missing out in 1938.

As far as state championships are concerned, the Thornton Academy won the first Football title in Class FFF back in 1954 and successfully defended it the following year and recently, the school won it in 2015.

Some of the best performances or rather the most memorable moments in the history of the Thornton Trojans have been created at the Dr. Paul S. Hill, Jr. Stadium, which is where the school holds its main outdoor events. The Hill stadium has been in operation for decades now, dating back to 1980 when it was first opened, serving as the Trojans’ home for football, soccer, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, as well as other outdoor track and field events. In fact, the Hill Stadium is considered one of the best high school paying venues in around here, which is why most of the regions’ athletics events are always held at this stadium.

Thornton Academy opened the William Shepherd Linnell Gymnasium back in 1963 and for years now, this major indoor athletic and convocation center not only serves the needs of the student-athletes but also the greater Saco community. This is where the Thornton Trojans basketball teams practice and play their matches and it’s also used by the school for assemblies, wellness classes as well as sprint commencement exercises. As far as the greater Saco community is concerned, the gym has hosted a series of events that include the annual college fair, the Children’s Winter Carnival and Kerryman’s Pub Road Race, otherwise known as Mary’s Walk, among other community and social events.

Maine has an old athletic rivalry between the Thornton Trojans Athletics and Biddeford Tigers, where the two institutions hold an annual football game on the 8th and final week of Class A football season. Locally, this rivalry is known as The Battle of the Bridge and the first match was played back in 1893, with the Trojans winning the game 12-0. The Tigers had to wait until the 6th game to taste victory against the Trojans, winning the match 13-5.

As a proud supporter of the Trojans, Denver Property Flip never misses any of the school’s sporting events.
